Once upon a time

The old maid was used to it,
sitting at the same corner
and knitting every day.
It’s been too many years now,
than she would like to admit,
too many chained windows
and broken dishes
that needed to be cleaned.

“How pathetic”
she used to say to herself,
“Look, just look at them,
those pitiful young brats.
They’re nothing more
than a bunch of selfish,
ignorant dreamers.”

And thus,
the years went by,
staying by her masters’ will,
cleaning all the sacred books
and caring for all she should,
perhaps forgetting nothing else
but the autumn’s leaves
slowly, slowly piling up
in the house’s backyard.

And now, the time has passed –
some say she’s almost sixty –
her eyes are getting weaker,
her legs are showing signs
of cracks;
and with her feeble pulse
she counts,
she counts,
each and every little yellow leave
the wind might bring
near her lonely window…
